The Honourable Edward C. Chiasson, Q.C.
The Honourable Edward C. Chiasson, Q.C. was appointed directly to the British Columbia Court of Appeal in 2006. During his 9 years on the bench, Mr. Chiasson presided over some of the country’s most complex, precedent-setting cases, and in so doing he frequently reinforced Canada’s position as an arbitration-friendly jurisdiction.
Prior to his elevation to the Court, Mr. Chiasson earned a reputation as one of Canada’s leading litigation counsel over 25 years of practice, with a focus on cross-border disputes and international commercial arbitration. Widely respected as one of the “pioneers” of international arbitration in Canada, Mr. Chiasson has sat as an arbitrator and acted as counsel in numerous high-profile cases, including investor-state matters under NAFTA and ICSID, as well as commercial disputes in ad hoc proceedings and under all major institutional rules. Mr. Chiasson’s broad experience spans all areas of commercial law, including large-scale construction and infrastructure projects.
Among his many honours and professional designations, Mr. Chiasson is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He has also held academic posts teaching alternative dispute resolution at the University of British Columbia and City University, Hong Kong.
