2019 CPR Canada Conference
CPR will hold its 2019 Canada Conference on Monday, February 4, 2019 between 8:15 am and 2 pm at the offices of Fasken in Toronto. The theme of this year's conference will be “Resolving the Unresolvable.”
The Conference is organized by the CPR Canada Advisory Board in collaboration with Arbitration Place and is co-chaired by CAB Members Rachel A. Howie of Dentons Canada, P. John Landry of DLA Piper and David Ziegler of Fasken.
At the conference, participants will engage in interactive panel discussions with distinguished in-house counsel and practitioners from Canada and the United States. The first panel titled "The Future of ADR" will explore how the ADR community is responding to recent attacks on and critiques of traditional arbitration and mediation, and how these and other ADR techniques can stay relevant as means to resolve disputes. The second panel will focus on the "Resolution of Complex, Multi-Stakeholder/Jurisdictional Disputes" and how ADR tools and mechanisms can efficiently be used by counsel to resolve these and other highly sensitive issues. A draft agenda is available HERE.
Our luncheon keynote speaker will be The Honourable Thomas Albert Cromwell, former Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. The Honourable Thomas Albert Cromwell is senior counsel in BLG’s Ottawa and Vancouver offices. As a member of the judiciary, Thomas sat on the Supreme Court of Canada from December 2008 to September 2016 and on the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal from 1997 to 2008. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Mr. Cromwell was executive legal officer to Chief Justice Antonio Lamer from 1992 to 1995. He began his career practising law in Kingston and Toronto, and has taught in the Faculty of Law at Dalhousie University. He is a Companion of the Order of Canada, serves as the Chair of the Chief Justice of Canada's Action Committee on Access to Justice in Civil and Family Matters, and is a Trudeau Foundation mentor.
