Thomas G. Heintzman, O.C., Q.C., FCIArb - 1941-2019

Thomas G. Heintzman, O.C., Q.C., FCIArb

Our former colleague and friend Tom Heintzman passed away on October 24, 2019 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Tom was one of our original arbitrators at Arbitration Place when we launched. He was a determined and dedicated supporter of Arbitration Place throughout.

Even after his illness led him to cease to sit as an arbitrator, Tom maintained ongoing contact with Arbitration Place.

Tom was an important contributor to arbitration in Canada, not only as an arbitrator but through various organizations, perhaps most importantly through the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He was chair of the Toronto Chapter and then, with a few others, worked to form the Canadian Branch which has assumed a significant place on the Canadian arbitration landscape.

Service to the legal profession was important to Tom. He served as president of both the Canadian Bar Association and the Ontario Bar Association, and was active in the International Bar Association at the highest level. Also, Tom was a two-term bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada (now, Law Society of Ontario).

Tom was a leading Canadian litigator, practising with McCarthy Tétrault for over 40 years. His practice included commercial, corporate and construction disputes as well as dispute involving government contracts, broadcasting and telecommunications, and environmental law.

Our sincere condolences to Tom’s wife, Mary-Jane, and Tom’s entire family.
